The port of Busan exceeded 1.5 million TEUs of monthly container throughput for the first time since its opening even in European financial crisis.

Busan Port Authority(BPA) announced that the container throughput in May recorded 1,552,000 TEUs, up 9.7% compared to the same period last year. Particularly transshipment containers jumped by 20% to 772,000 TEUs playing the leading role in raising container traffic.

According to BPA's own analysis, rapid growth of transshipment throughput results from a sort of synergy effect interlinking their continuous marketing activities towards global carriers with Busan's advantages including activation of the new port. BPA has a policy to carry out visit to global shipping companies' head offices and regional headquarters while activating incentive system.

After breaking through the record one by one starting from 1 million TEUs in 1984, 2 millions in 1988, 5 millions in 1998 and 10 millions in 2003, Busan finally exceeded 15 millions(exactly 16.18 millions) last year.

Mr. Roh Ki Tae, a CEO of BPA, said in this regard "We are pleased to see that our transshipment cargo attraction campaign has brought about some tangible results. At the present rate of progress, the port of Busan will be able to achieve more than 17.5 million TEUs this year."
